Night Blindness


Night blindness is also called Nyctalopia, which means a person cannot see well at night or in poor light. Night blindness is not an eye condition itself, but is a symptom of other eye problems, such as untreated short sightedness. The ability of the eyes to quickly view objects as they shift from light to dark areas and the ability to see in dim light or at night is an important part of our visual health. When you are not able to do such thing, the condition is referred to commonly as night blindness.

What causes night blindness?

Night blindness is due to a disorder of the cells in the retina that are responsible for vision in dim light. It has many causes, including short sightedness, glaucoma medications that work by constricting the pupil, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, or it may also occur due to vitamin A deficiency. Keep in mind that people with diabetes are at higher risk for night vision problems
In order to determine what causing night blindness is, the optician will perform a thorough eye examination and may arrange any of a number of specialized examinations.



Symptoms are difficulty or inability to see in low light or darkness. While driving, this may also occur a few seconds after the bright headlights of an oncoming car have passed.

A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. Some risk factors for night blindness include age, Genetics, Diet, or it might cause some disorder that affect the ability of the body to absorb vitamin A such as Liver disorders, Surgery on the pancreas or liver, Intestinal conditions, Bowel surgery for obesity.

How is night blindness treated?

Treatment for night blindness will depend upon its cause. Treatment may be as simple as a new prescription for your glasses or switching glaucoma medications, or it may require surgery in cases of cataracts.


Night blindness is a classic finding from deficiency of vitamin A. Sources of vitamin A include animal livers, milk, and yellow and green leafy vegetables which contain carotenes, chemically related substances that are converted to vitamin A in the body. Eating a diet with adequate amounts of vitamin A may help prevent night blindness. Follow your doctor’s advice to keep chronic illnesses under good control resources.
