Drug Candidate Against Alzheimer’s Disease Goes on Human Trials

Australian researchers have developed a pill that, hopefully, might stop of delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The drug, called PBT2, demonstrated its efficacy in mice trials, and will be entering human trials in Sweden in a couple of months.

The institute’s tests also showed that PBT2 blocked the interaction between the amyloid protein and metals such as copper and zinc in the brain, stopping the development of Alzheimer’s. Amyloid accumulates more rapidly in the presence of metals.

The researchers from the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, Australia are working in collaboration with Prana Biotechnology Limited, an Australian biotech firm developing therapies for age-related diseases.
