Botox: Beyond Wrinkles And Sweat


An article in the December issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reviews the current treatment applications and limitations of Botox (BTX-A), aside from that which is most popular, which is it’s use in aesthetic medicine. Discussed are the data on the use of Botox in

  • inflammatory diseases, muscle spasticity and pain alleviation
  • proctology, and as non-surgical therapy for anal fissure
  • as an inhibitor of acetylcholine, substance P and glutamate, and its applicability in the treatment of various types of eczema and pruritus, and
  • as a blocker of the secretion of sweat/saliva/mucus and its applications in Hailey–Hailey disease, facial eccrine hidrocystomas, salivary fistulas, and intrinsic rhinitis
