WUSTL Tackles Genome Sequencing of Maize
Filed in archive Food and Agriculture on November 22, 2005

The rice genome has been fully sequenced just recently, and now it's maize, or corn's turn. Genome Sequencing Center (GSC) researchers at the Washington State University will commence an estimated 3 year project on maize genome squencing next month, the first sequences to be made available early next year.
Robert T. Fraley, senior vice president and chief technology officer for Monsanto, said:
"Completion of the maize genome will allow agricultural researchers to identify new genes responsible for important traits like yield and drought tolerance, creating opportunities to bring additional value to farmers around the world."
