Sweden's Bioagaia, Into a New Line of Anti-inflammatory Probiotics
Filed in archive Food and Agriculture , Microbiology , Patents and Intellectual Property Rights on April 3, 2006
Biogaia of Sweden acquired a new patent on certain Lactobacilli strains that could lead to various applications in inflammatory research.
Biogaia's managing director Peter Rothschild believes that this new patent is an important step in developing a new generation of probiotics that are directed at specific indications.
Reuteri, which are not currently available in the market, is one of the strains included in Biogaia's new patent. The company is now looking into Helicobacter pylori, which is associated to gastroenteritis, stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Biogaia's research indicated that its Reuteri probiotic survived and colonized the human stomach while directly reducing the number of Helicobacter pylori, which in effect reduced the infection.

My opinion is that a lot of money is spent without justification. Supporting an idea like this one could benefit mankind so i believe they should ask for more capital.
