Serono Hold Talks With Biopharmaceutical Giants For Potential Take-over

Third biggest biotech company Serono has held talks with four biopharma giants about a potential $15 billion takeover. Interested parties were: Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi-Aventis and Pfizer. Amgen bows out, Roger Perlmutter, vice-president of research and development saying
"I don't think Amgen would be a very good partner for them (Serono)."
In addition to reproductive health, Serono has strong market positions in neurology, metabolism and growth and has recently entered the psoriasis area. Serono hired investment bank Goldman Sachs Group to explore various strategic alternatives.
