NIH's Genetic Association Information Network Receives Funds from Pfizer and Affymetrix

With President Bush cutting down federal budget for medical research, NIH is lucky to receive infusion of funds from private firms.
Pfizer Inc. and Affymetrix Inc. are giving more than $20 million dollars to NIH to fund a project called the Genetic Association Information Network. The project aims to study the human genome map and identify tiny differences -- known as SNPs, or single-nucleotide polymorphisms -- that are determine actual disease risks.
Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker, is donating $5 million to help start that project, plus $15 million in laboratory studies to do that analysis for five common Diseases. Biotechnology company Affymetrix Inc., a leading maker of gene-analysis equipment, is donating the resources for similar DNA analysis for two additional diseases.
