Modified Polymer for Medical Implants with Antibiotic Coating
A new report in the Feb. 12 edition of ACS' Biomacromolecules describes a new method of producing a polymer which can be used in medical implants, wherein penicillin adheres to its surface and remains highly effective. In laboratory experiments, it has been demonstrated that the penicillin-coated surfaces showed highly effective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, which causes many serious antibiotic-resistant human infections.

Such a polymer that supports antibacterial coatings may be useful in manufacturing medical implants, including contact lenses, vascular grafts and other reconstructive surgery procedures.

You can access the report Antibacterial Surfaces on Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene; Penicillin Attachment here or download a pdf copy.
