Frova Shows Efficacy Against Menstrual Migraines
Filed in archive Drugs, Vaccines and Therapeutics on May 9, 2006
Frova® (frovatriptan succinate) is an FDA-approved drug indicated against acute migraine in adults. Further efficacy studies however, showed that Frova is also effective for the short-term (6 days/month) prevention of menstrual migraine. Its manufacturer, Vernalis plc therefore plans to apply a supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) with the US FDA and if approved, Frova will be the only triptan indicated in teh US for the treatment of menstrual migraine. Triptan is a class of drugs that acts as an agonist that triggers serotonin, a hormone affecting the constriction of blood vessels which in turn, may cause migraines.
"Menstrual migraines can have significant impact on a woman's life. The preliminary results of this study are encouraging for women who suffer from menstrual migraine and who have not responded well to acute treatment," said the lead investigator in the trial, Jan Lewis Brandes, M.D., of the Nashville Neuroscience Group and of the Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Patient brochures and information leaflets (pdf files) are available from the Frova website.
