FDA Approves Contraceptive Implant, Implanon
Filed in archive Drugs, Vaccines and Therapeutics on July 23, 2006
An implantable contraceptive that has been sold in more than 30 countries has finally been approved in the US. Implanon(etonogestrel implant) 68mg is a 1.5-inch-long rod designed to be implanted underneathe the skin of the upper arm. From there, it will release a slow and steady dose of progestin (etonogestrel) --a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone-- for a period of up to three years.
Implanon is the latest in the selection of contraceptives marketed by Organon, which includes NuvaRing, a vaginal contraceptive ring.

Norplant is a well recognized cause of ideopathic intracranial hypertension a.k.a. pseudotumor cerebri. A condition that leads to blindness. Implanon has the same exact side effects. The FDA should be put out of business. Garbage in garbage out! I bet it's the same drug company as Norplant that is putting out Implanon to get back all the $$$ lost from the lawsuits in the Norplant civil action. Say "NO" to implanon! unless you would like to take medication for the rest of your life to keep from going blind!

I just had the Implanon place in April. I have had irrecgular spotting and just had what I thought was a period. I married two weeks ago and am fighting a second urinary tract infection (we were not sexually active prior to the wedding). Could this be related to Implanon?

I (luckily) just had my implanon removed today. I also had several urinary tract infections while my implanon was in. I also spotted then would have two full periods in one month. I also had pain down my arm, even when I would keep my arm still. I went to have it checked at the same place that put it in and they gave me a sales pitch about how great it is and that the woman's daughter has the implanon and love it an said mine was fine. The doctor who removed it (I went somewhere else to get it removed) said they placed the implant too deep. I advise everyone who has the implanon to get it removed. I would rather be blessed with a child than cursed with many side effects.

I have had the implanon in since November last year. I have had recurrent UTI's since then but doctors "assure" me this isn't linked. I have also had VERY irredular periods and spotting. Annoying as!

22 year old female. No history of UTI's EVER. Implanon placed in arm 3/2009. Six UTI's since placement through 10/09. Scheduled removal with gyn that put it in. She tried to talk me out of it, refused to remove it that day for 'lack of time', and said there was NO WAY the UTI's were related to the Implanon. Nurse belittled me when I said I had read comments on the internet about others with UTI complaints. Told me I could find information out about UFO's on the internet too. Needless to say, have an appt scheduled with a PROFESSIONAL (ie, different facility) to have implanon removed. Will update to let you know if UTI's stop also.

I am looking for a new birth control and my doctor gave me info about Implanon. She recomended it because I can't take a lot of others. I read this blog and it made me totally change my mind. After reading it, I looked at the info I was given. It doesn't even list UTI's as a possible side effect. I won't be using this product. Thanks for all of your posts!

UPDATE: I got my Implanon removed in November. I had a UTI in November but NONE, ZERO, NADA since that time. I have NO doubt that the Implanon caused these UTI's.
Alish - I am so sorry to hear about your friend.

I had the implanon put in 2 yrs ago. At the same time I started getting UTIs. I have had more than I can count since then, and now have bladder problems and possible kidney problems due to the amount I have had. I had never had one before, and this was the only thing that had changed in my life at the time of getting my 1st one. No-one wants to link the implanon and UTIs which is why it took me ages to figure out this was the problem!

I got mine put in when I was 16, and I've had it in for three years now. Prior to the implant I hadn't had any problems what-so-ever, but I slowly began having more and more UTI's. It's gotten to the point where any time I have sex I end up with a UTI. I've had it in for three years now. (I also never had a period while on it. I'm pretty sure not having a period for years at a time can cause UTI's. It scares me that doctors aren't willing to make that connection.)

I agree completely, I went on implanon and started getting recurring cystitis (UTI's). I had never had a uti before the implant and suspect the lack of estrogen may play a part ? Once i went off the implant I still got recurring UTI's but I believe it is because my body was so sensitive by then from them recurring. I never got rid of. :( I also believe the implant makes your head crazy, like I started analyzing things and thinking about bad stuff. AS SOON as I got it taken out my body felt this amazing relief
