FDA Approves Contraceptive Implant, Implanon
An implantable contraceptive that has been sold in more than 30 countries has finally been approved in the US. Implanon(etonogestrel implant) 68mg is a 1.5-inch-long rod designed to be implanted underneathe the skin of the upper arm. From there, it will release a slow and steady dose of progestin (etonogestrel) --a syntheticlinks hormone similar to progesterone-- for a period of up to three years.

Implanon is the latest in the selection of contraceptives marketed by Organon, which includes NuvaRing, a vaginal contraceptive ring.
