Biotrace International claims having developed a novel method of measuring microbial load of dairy products. The Cogent Microbial Luminescence System (MLSII) detects microbial counts using adenosine triphosphate bioluminiscence technology, needs only 27 minutes for the assay results to be generated. That's about 48 hours shorter that the conventional methods of microbial quality control, which means, that this device can help bring time-sensitive foods such as dairy products to the market sooner.

This may also be applied to other products needing microbial screening and possibly environmental samples, too. I have personally used this technique (but not this particular device) to monitor microbial biomass in environmental samples.
