Angels Invest In Life Science and Biotech Companies
Filed in archive Corporate and Industrial News on October 18, 2005
I just learned that in venture capitalist lingo, "angels" refer to wealthy individuals who invest money on private companies. An article in the Boston Business journal says that life science and biotechnology companies are the current popular investment choices among such angels, having received about 40% of these investors' money in the first half of 2005.
"Investors shied away from the life sciences and biotech sectors for a while because of the long exit horizons, but the possibility of high potential returns have helped angels realize that there are more possibilities in making deals work now," says Jeffrey Sohl, Center for Venture Research director.
Angels, however, preferred investing in late-stage, rather than in start-up companies.

My understanding of angel investors is that while they are typical high net worth individuals who make most of their investments in more traditional sectors (ie low risk), what makes them angels is that they will step in and invest in very early stage, high risk investments that more traditional investors would avoid. They can do this because the amount they typically invest in these early stage ventures is relatively small given the overall size of their portfolio.
