About Me
Filed in archive on July 8, 2005

My name is Ruth Schaffer and I'll be keeping you updated on the latest news and developments in Biotechnology. Shortly after finishing my Bachelor's Degree in biology, I spent two years teaching General Biology, General Microbiology and Food Microbiology laboratory courses at the University of the Philippines. After a short stint working in the industry as a quality control analyst, I spent more than five years at the International Rice Research Institute, doing microbiological and biochemical studies of rice paddy soils. Simultaneousl with my job at IRRI, I worked on my Masters Degree in Microbiology, which was awarded in 2001. Currently, I am with the Institute of Applied Microbiology at the Justus Liebig University in Germany, working on a project which aims to identify and characterize iron-reducing bacteria from marine sediments.
Although I am a scientist by profession, I am also a wife and a mother to a precocious 3 yr-old, an editor of a webzine and an Asian travel blogger.
